What to Wear Guide for Photoshoots

Simple, Stress Free Styling Tips for Beautiful, Timeless Photos

Choosing outfits for your photoshoot can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. These tips are based on what consistently photographs well and helps create natural, flattering images. Use these as a guide and most importantly, have fun, keep it simple, and be yourself.

What to Avoid in Your Photoshoot Outfits:

Neon or Fluorescent Colors

Bright neon shades can distract from your faces, clash with natural scenery, and create unflattering color reflections on your skin.

Loud or Distracting Patterns

Patterns are great, but bold, busy designs can pull attention away from you. Choose simple, subtle prints that photograph nicely.

Vertical Stripes

Vertical stripes often distort on camera and are not as flattering in photos.

Large Watches and Worded Bracelets

Big accessories or bracelets with writing can draw attention away from expressions and intimate moments.

Heavy Makeup or Orange Toned Spray Tans

Aim for natural, soft makeup. If you are getting professional hair or makeup, ask if they have experience with engagement or wedding sessions and request to see photos.

For spray tans, choose an olive tone and schedule it about a week before your session so it has time to settle and soften.

Overpacking Clothing Options

Bringing one or two backup outfits is great, but try not to bring your entire closet. Keeping options simple helps reduce stress.

Matching Each Other Exactly

Avoid wearing identical colors. Instead, choose coordinating tones. If one person wears a light top, the other can wear a darker shade from the same color family.

What Photographs Beautifully:

Neutral and Soft Colors

Whites, creams, greys, tans, dusty blues, and caramels always look great. Neutrals exist in every color, so choose a softer hue instead of something bright.

If you want a bolder look, deep tones such as burnt orange, navy, burgundy, or rich red photograph beautifully.

Complimentary Outfits and Location Inspired Styling

Choose outfits that work well together and match your setting.

Beach sessions look great with flowy dresses or shorts and button up shirts.

Urban or city sessions work well with layers and more structured outfits.

Outdoor sessions look beautiful with earthy tones and soft textures.

If you are unsure, feel free to ask.

Different Textures

Knit sweaters, linen shirts, flowy fabrics, and layered materials add visual interest without being distracting.

Layers and Accessories

Layers express personality and photograph well. Cardigans, jackets, belts, or scarves can add dimension.

If you wear a flowy dress, consider a belt so we can still see your shape.

Flowy Pieces

Long flowy skirts and dresses create movement in photos especially at the beach and add romance and depth.

Men: Collared Shirts or Polos

Simple, clean, and classic. Pair them with shorts or pants depending on the location and season.

Additional Tips for a Smooth Session

Arrive On Time or a Little Early

Showing up early helps you feel relaxed. Use that time to touch up lipstick, shake out nerves, listen to music, or get the kids settled.

Come Prepared

Bring snacks and drinks for kids, comfy shoes, extra clothes, and any touch up items you might need.

Confidence Makes All the Difference

A positive mindset shines through in photos. I will guide you through posing, but the best images happen when you are relaxed, moving naturally, and interacting with each other.
